Amazon Prime Video service launches in India; brings regional content in several languages

July 25, 2025

Launched in July this year, the Amazon Prime subscription in India is available at an introductory price of ₹499 ($7.5) for a year (expected to go up to ₹999 per year). Amazon Prime Video directly competes with Netflix which launched in India earlier this year, and has plans starting at ₹500 per month and local player, Hotstar which has a freemium model with premium plan available for ₹199 per month. Of course, the Amazon Prime subscription has other benefits too when you’re shopping from Amazon.

There’s an option to download the content or offline viewing, however, there is no Chromecast support at the moment. You can choose the streaming quality between Best, Better, Good, and Data Saver depending on your internet connection and data plans.

In the months leading to the launch, Amazon India has announced partnerships with several content partners for Prime Video like Dharma Productions, T-Series, Vishesh Films, Green Gold Animation, et al. There’s a clear focus on regional content with movies available in Tamil, Telugu, Marathi and Bengali apart from English and Hindi.

What are your thoughts on Amazon Prime Video? On first glance, there’s more Indian content than Netflix has managed in the last few months, and in more languages. Give it a whirl, and let us know how you like it.
