Come and see what a $30 Android phone offers in 2018

June 24, 2025

Alcatel has announcedseveral smartphonesrecently, set to be released in the coming months. One we weren’t expecting, however, was a new ultra-budget device.

The Alcatel Verso is a $30 phone running Android Nougat, available right now at Cricket Wireless. It features a 5-inch, 854 x 480 resolution and Dragontrail Glass protection, as well as a 1.1 GHz MSM8909 quad-core chip. There’s 2 GB of RAM inside, with 16 GB of internal storage (expandable up to 128 GB), and a 2,050 mAh battery, while it also features LTE support.

As for the cameras, the Verso comes with a 5 MP sensor on the back with LED flash, and a 2 MP camera at the front (full specs can be viewed on theAlcatel website).

$30 phones have fallen off the radar a bit in the western markets lately (though Google recently announced that $30 Android One devices wouldbe heading to India this month), and I understand that the Verso isn’t going to excite people like the latest flagships do. But it’s still impressive in some ways.

My 2017 flagship phone used 47 apps over the last day, requiring an average of 2.08 GB of RAM; that only just exceeds what this handset offers. The Verso should be capable of the vast majority of functions that any other modern flagship is capable of, it just won’t look as good or be as snappy when doing them. And let’s not forget that the iPhone 7 manages fine with 2 GB of RAM—though you can’t exactly compare the platforms.

If you’re interested, the Verso comes in one color, black, and you can pick it up at the link below. Give me your thoughts on low-cost Androids in the comments.
