Dark Sky for Android gets long-overdue update

June 01, 2025

TheDark Skyweather app hit Androida little over two years ago, and since then has become the de facto app for many Android users. However, since launch not much about the app has changed; that is, until today. A new Dark Sky update brings the app to 2.0 status, and it looks awesome.

Along with some long-overdue UI enhancements, the new Dark Sky update adds a slick new feature called Time Machine. If you use Dark Sky’s web-based app calledForecast, you already know all about Time Machine: it lets you view the weather in the past so you can have an idea of what weather in the future will be like.

Check out some new screenshots of the app below:

The left-most screenshot is of the weather in New Haven right now as well as the forecast for the next 24 hours. The middle screenshot is of the weather on the fourth of this month from midnight until 10:00 P.M. And the right-most screenshot is a broad satellite view of the Northeast (which, as you can see, is totally clear at the moment).

Dark Sky is a free app, but there is a premium service as well. For $2.99 per year (which is an insane deal) you get down-to-the-minute forecasts, weather notifications for your exact location, a persistent notification in your drawer, and specialized home screen widgets. If you’re a weather nut, the premium version of Dark Sky is a no-brainer.
