HUAWEI announces super-affordable honor 8 with P9 specs

HUAWEI has just announced the latest affordable device in its honor sub-brand: thehonor 8. As with many honor phones, this all-glass affair is priced very nicely: only a little more than half the cost of theHUAWEI P9flagship. But despite its low price tag it shares a specs sheet almost identical to the P9. That in itself makes this a very interesting phone.
The honor 8 packs a 5.2-inch Full HD display, 3/4 GB of RAM in the 32/64 GB storage versions, microSD expansion, USB Type-C, 3,000 mAh battery, 8 MP front-facing camera and dual 12 MP rear-facing cameras.
It’s runningAndroid 6.0 Marshmallowand HUAWEI’sEMUI4.1 interface and you’ll also get one of HUAWEI’s excellent finger scanners on the back. If all this sounds familiar, it should, because these are all the same specs found on the HUAWEI P9.
There are three big differences between the honor 8 and HUAWEI P9. First up, the processor. While the P9 ships with the top-end Kirin 955, the honor 8 gets the slightly less powerful Kirin 950. Second, the dual cameras on the honor 8 don’t have the fancy Leica branding like those on the P9, but then again, the value of that “branding” isstill up for debate.
The third big difference is the price. Where the P9 cost¥3,188 at launch for the 32 GB/3 GB version and¥3,688 for the 64 GB/4 GB version, the honor 8 costs just¥1,999 and¥2,499. To put that in U.S. dollar perspective, that’s the equivalent of $492/$569 vs $298/$373.
Don’t consider those conversions to be indicative of U.S. pricing if the honor 8 gets a U.S. release though. Straight conversions don’t count for much: after all, the Euro pricing for the P9 versions was a massive€685/€731. But the way things stand now, the honor 8 price is very impressive for the hardware you get.
