Huawei’s next foldable phone is officially coming soon with a key design change
June 26, 2025
It’s something of an open secret that HUAWEI is working on a new foldable phone, but the company has been pretty silent on the details. Now, HUAWEI hasconfirmedthe launch date and title of its next foldable, the HUAWEI Mate X2.
The firm’s third foldable will make its bow in China on February 22 — a year after theHUAWEI Mate XSmade its debut.

Although the phones share similar titles, there is one key difference between the Mate X/XS and Mate X2. While the first two devices use outward-folding screens, the HUAWEI Mate X2 will adopt an inward folding design — similar to theSamsung Galaxy Z Fold 2
It’s a design tweak that should provide better protection for the fragile display, but may come at the cost of functionality. The Mate XS’s outward display also served as a selfie camera mirror, allowing users to capture themselves using the primary camera array. Unless the Mate X2 has a secondary rear screen, this won’t be possible.

Per thelatest leaks, this won’t be the case. The HUAWEI Mate X2 is expected to sport an 8.01-inch 2,480 x 2,200 folding display with a larger 6.45-inch screen up front. Internally, a Kirin 9000 chipset is powered by a 4,400mAh battery. As for camera hardware, we could see a 50MP main camera joined by three tertiary shooters. There will seemingly be a dedicated 16MP selfie camera, too.
Despitereaders’ criesfor Google’s return to HUAWEI devices, it seems unlikely the phone will launch with GMS. It’s also unclear if the Mate X2 will mark Harmony OS’s official debut on a smartphone.
HUAWEI has yet to confirm any additional details of the Mate X2, but expect more info to emerge later this month.
