OmniROM’s Android 8.1 Oreo builds go on a weekly update schedule

OmniROM is one of the more popular Android ROMs available, and fans of the custom software will be happy to know that the team behind it started weekly builds for Android 8.1 Oreo.
Taking a look atXDA Developers‘ great dive into OmniROM, the custom software offers features like advanced reboot, dual-column settings, dynamic notification drawer headers, and OmniSwitch, which lets you change up the look and feel of the app switcher.
As is typically the case with other custom ROMs, OmniROM lets you get as granular as you’d like. Within settings, you can customize the rotation modes, hardware button behavior, long-press actions for the Home and Recents buttons, and the LED indicator. You can also apply system-wide themes through the Overlay Manager Service, something made much easier with Android Oreo.
One of the biggest reasons to hold back from installing custom ROMs, including OmniROM, is due to image quality. AsXDA Developerscorrectly explains, custom ROMs do not tap into the camera app and post-processing from the device’s stock ROM, since the original firmware includes certain code that only the stock ROM can take advantage of.
That is certainly true of the OmniROM camera app, which delivers weaker images than those delivered by the stock camera app. Relative to images taken with the Google Camera on thePixel XLandOnePlus 5T, OmniROM’s camera app takes pictures that are over-exposed and blurrier, particularly in low-light conditions.
Apart from image quality, the biggest reason to hold back is device support. For now, OmniROM’s Android 8.1 Oreo weekly builds are availably on the OnePlus 3, OnePlus 3T, OnePlus 5, and Samsung Galaxy Tab S2. That list is very small, though the team promises it will grow over time.
