Report: Google TV to feature a ‘basic’ UI mode sans smart TV features

When buying a new TV there’s a high chance the display will pack a slew of smart features. Finding a dumb TV is becoming a tougher task (for better or worse), but it seems thatGoogle TVmay give users an option to dumb down their TV experience.
According to a9to5Googlereport, when Google TV does make its way to TVs, the UI will feature a “Basic TV” option. As the option’s title suggests, it’ll effectively give users a completely bare version of the UI featuring only the essential inputs.
When setting up Google TV, users will be asked to pick between a full Google TV UI environment or the Basic TV layout. In the latter, only inputs and Live TV will seemingly remain as options. Key smart features, like personalization, Google Assistant, and apps, won’t feature in this mode. Users won’t even be able to cast content from their phone to their TV.
While Google’s OS will still be installed on the TV, Basic TV mode will transform it into a simple display.
For some, it might seem a needless option. Smart TVs are enormously useful for those who binge content from a number of services or cast content to their displays. However, these TVs also have their flaws. As another IoT device laden with personal data, a smart TV is another potential security vulnerability on your home network.

Interestingly, a number ofAndroid Authorityusersin this pollclaim that they largely rely on streaming dongles despite owning smart TVs. For these users, smart TV features won’t really be missed.
