The Nokia 3, 5 and 6 will see Android Oreo in 2017

The value-focused Nokia 3,5, and6could see a major update soon. According to an executive from HMD Global, all three phones will get Android Oreo by the end of the year. HMD is the company that produces Nokia smartphones, and its General Manager for Australia, New Zealand, and Indonesia, Mark Trundie, let it slip during an interview that the phones would see the update before the ball drops.
There might be more good news. TheNokia 8‘s Android Oreo update might be just around the corner, too. We recently told you that HMD wastesting the updateand it would be released when it was “perfect”. Well, it might be nearing perfection. According to a report fromVtechgraphy, an HMD Manager told those in attendance at a launch party for the Nokia 8 in Taiwan that the Oreo update would start at the end of October at the earliest. The Nokia 8 isn’t even out insome large marketsyet, so word of a major software update right around the corner is welcomed news.
Nokia devices run a stock version of Android, much like Motorola devices. This gives it the upper hand against competitors like Samsung and LG since it won’t take it as long (in theory) to update its phones. That could be a major selling point as HMD tried to make Nokia into the powerhouse it once was.
Running stock Android is also likely what’s giving extended life to Nokia’s more budget-friendly devices. The 3, 5, and 6 are all priced very competitively at the low end of the spectrum. Normally, companiesdon’t push many software updatesto devices like these. Profit margins arealready slimand putting man-hours into developing software updates costs money. The fact that the Nokia 3 is priced at $140 and is now seeingits second OS updatein a year is impressive.
If HMD keeps it up with the inexpensive devices with stock Android and quick updates, it just may make us forget about the Nexus program.
