Yahoo weather app is updated, showcases Flickr photos as background images

June 17, 2025

As weather apps go, Yahoo’s has always been really nice; reliable, and pretty nice to look at. With the company in turmoil, the app stagnated a bit. Still a good option for the weather conscious, it just didn’t bring anything new to the table.

AsYahoo!turned itself around, then took over (and updated, giving out a full terabyte of storage for users)Flickr, it appearedYahoo!had a larger goal in mind. It was clear to just about everyone thatYahoo!was making a push to get people to switch to their service for photo storage.

Yahoo Weather app

Now we find the marriage of the two, withYahoo!weather being updated to further showcase stunningFlickrphotos.Flickrhas been involved in what they call “project weather” for a while, but this update brings those photos front and center.

For those unfamiliar withproject weather,it’s pretty simple: Take photos, tag your location, and give weather information. That info is matched to whatYahoo!weather picks up, and features the photo (if it’s a good one) in the app. Now that the project has been going on for a while, it seemsYahoo!andFlickrare comfortable they have enough good photos to make it a central part of the app.

That’s not the only thing the revampedYahoo!weather app brings. From theFlickrblog post:

[quote qtext=”The app is sleek and powerful, featuring an intuitive design that brings you more data than ever before. 10-day and 24-hour forecasts, chances of precipitation, wind and pressure measurements, moon phases, UV patterns, sunrise and sunset times, an interactive map, a new widget for your lock screen; all of these features are right at your fingertips.” qperson=”” qsource=”” qposition=”center”]

It was already a great app, but this update should push it over the edge a bit. If I weren’t such aGoogle Nowjunkie, I’d probably be apt to switch toYahoo!.
